As it stands today, Facebook Notes is hardly comparable to the blogging powerhouse that is Tumblr. Very limited formatting options are available, and while you can add photos, you can’t add video or animated gifs. Not to mention that the Notes feature is hidden under the “More” dropdown of an individual’s timeline (along with quite a few other features that go largely unused by the masses). And while notes do pop up in Facebook’s feed, they don’t get much more traction than that.
But there are rumblings that Facebook has much bigger plans for Notes. Facebook recently acquired Storylane, a blogging platform that described itself as “the home for personal thoughts and stories that go deeper than a quick Facebook or Twitter update.” And it was rumored that Facebook was a potential buyer for Tumblr before Yahoo made its purchase. When questioned directly on their plans for Notes, it seems that Facebook didn’t offer up any details, but responded with a “coy look and vague advice to watch out for something.”
While it’s certain that a lot needs to be done before Facebook has something that can compete with Tumblr (or any other blogging platform, for that matter), a better, more user-friendly version of Facebook Notes just might be on the horizon.
